I wrote the first comprehensive definition of documentation quality for Technical Communication, the journal of the Society for Technical Communication in 1985. This definition appears in many textbooks of technical writing and although it has received minor by other authors, it remains substantially mine.
In 2012, at the request of friends and colleagues who never learned many life skills and whose kids were computer savvy but helpless at the tasks of daily living, I began Pocatello Sewing School, where I teach children and adults to sew. I find that the balance between editing and writing (me and the computer) and teaching people to sew (color, texture, and live students) works extremely well, with each job energizing me. I am a better editor and a better sewing teacher when I balance in this way.
